On July 28, I stood in front of a packed room at the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce. The event was part of their Lunch & Learn Summer Speaker Series — "AI & Technology For Businesses" — and the turnout told me something I already suspected: people in the trades are hungry for this conversation.
Not theory. Not buzzwords. They wanted to know how AI actually works in a real business. Their business.
I run General Air Conditioning & Plumbing. We've been integrating AI into our operations — dispatching, service notes, troubleshooting, customer communication. This wasn't a pitch from a stage. It was a field report from someone still in the work.
Here's what I took away from that room, and what I think every operator needs to hear.
1. The gap isn't technology. It's permission.
Most people in that room had access to ChatGPT, Grok, or Claude already. What they didn't have was permission — from themselves, from their team culture, from their own comfort zone — to actually use it. The first barrier to AI adoption isn't cost or capability. It's the belief that this stuff isn't for you. It is.
2. "The quality of your questions determines the quality of your outcomes."
This is something I say on The Tradepreneur Show, and it landed hard in that room. AI is only as good as the prompt you give it. If you ask a vague question, you get a vague answer. If you ask a specific, well-structured question — with context, constraints, and a clear goal — you get something genuinely useful. The skill isn't in knowing AI. It's in knowing what you need.
3. AI is your co-pilot, not your replacement.
I've said this before: think of AI not as your replacement, but as your co-pilot in the job you do and how to be better, more effective, quicker. The room responded to this. Nobody in the trades is worried about a robot showing up to fix an AC unit. They're worried about falling behind the operator who's already using AI to dispatch smarter, write cleaner service notes, and pull part numbers from a photo.

4. Start small. Start today.
The biggest mistake I see is people waiting for the "right time" to start using AI. There is no right time. Pick one thing — writing service descriptions, researching parts, drafting customer emails — and use AI for that one thing this week. The tool will teach you how to use it. Just start messing around with it.
5. Consistency beats intensity.
The operators who win with AI aren't the ones who go deep for a week and quit. They're the ones who show up every day, try one prompt, learn one workflow, and build the habit. The secret ingredient to all of it is consistency. Just show up.
What's Next
That Lunch & Learn confirmed something for me: the appetite is real. The trades aren't behind — they're early. The operators in that room are ahead of 90% of their peers just by showing up.
If you weren't there and want to go deeper, I'm building out more of this on the podcast and here on the blog. Subscribe to The Operator Circle below and you'll get The Dispatch every week — practical AI, leadership, and growth insights from someone still in the field.
No fluff. No theory. Just what's working.
